Transferring files from your host machine into the DaDesktop environment

Trainers have frequently asked for the ability to move files from their personal laptop or desktop directly into a DaDesktop machine. These could be presentations, installation ISOs for use in a nested virtualisation setup that lets you run multiple servers and desktops, or just any general files needed for a specific training app.

Our team has introduced a straightforward drag-and-drop file transfer function into the newest Win 10 and most Linux templates. You simply drag files from your host machine (your own laptop or desktop) and drop them straight into DaDesktop.

Drag and drop files

At the moment, the feature handles one file at a time. If you need to copy several files, just create a zip archive and drag and drop that over. The transfer splits files into chunks for efficient sending, and it performs best over a fast fibre internet connection. The folder structure inside the archive—like a zip file—remains intact.

Uploaded Files

For Linux templates, there isn't yet a desktop shortcut to the Uploads folder like you'd see on Windows. Instead, you can find the files at:

/home/student/uploads-to-dadesktop

In short:

Templates where this feature is currently enabled

Templates that don't yet have this feature (for now)

Please note that more additions to this 'early release' feature are coming shortly.
