Fresh Start Cloning Hiccups and Their Solutions

Most applications behave just fine when set up on the Fresh Start machine in DaDesktop (DD). However, a couple of them don't behave as expected after cloning, and require a little extra effort to get back to normal.

• Oracle Database Server – You'll need to swap out the hostname that gets duplicated and point it to 127.0.0.1
• Hyper-V server – When cloning from a FreshStart setup, Hyper-V runs into trouble with duplicate MAC addresses if the External switch is turned on.
• Google Chrome – On cloned machines, Chrome sometimes fails to launch because it's tied to a profile on the Fresh Start machine—especially if that machine wasn't fully shut down before cloning.
• WSL - Windows System for Linux – Testing has revealed that DaDesktop machines carrying a WSL setup aren't portable: moving such a machine to a different DD server will prevent it from booting. The exact cause is unclear, but it's likely because Windows makes certain hardware assumptions. If the machine gets moved, things break. Since WSL isn't commonly used for training—Linux is usually run directly—we haven't fully dug into this yet.
• Issues where a trial software licence uses the MAC address to track the licence – This happens when a trial licence is locked to a specific MAC address. After cloning, the system thinks the licence has already been activated and consumed.
• Any apps that need licenses might have to be installed once FreshStart has been cloned.
   

Other snags you might bump into with DaDesktop

• Very slow Virtualbox seen when using Hyper-V and VirtualBox (This isn't exclusive to DaDesktop)

  Problem: VirtualBox crawls on Windows machines, making it almost impossible to teach a course. But the fix is dead simple:

  Solution 2: Make sure you apply the Hyper-V Server workaround mentioned earlier; otherwise, duplicate MAC addresses result in sluggish performance, slow booting, and other odd behaviour.

• Unable to type certain characters ie Apostrophes / Quotation Marks, Inverted Commas, into the DaDesktop machine.
